PEE WEE ERWIN - TRUMPETER

Autographed 8” x 10” matte double-weight original Al White photograph of the great jazz trumpeter in concert.  Inscribed to the photographer.

Pee Wee (George) Erwin (1913-1981) was one of those jazz masters who literally played up to the day he died.  Born in Nebraska, Erwin played in the Midwest bands of Joe Haymes and Isham Jones before moving to New York City in 1934.  He was immediately hired by Benny Goodman and played with his band until 1935, moving on to Ray Noble in 1935.  While playing for Noble he appeared in the film The Big Broadcast of 1936. (filmed in 1935)  Then it was back to Goodman in 1936, then in 1937 he hopped over to Tommy Dorsey’s Band, this time he remained until 1939.  From 1941-42 and again in 1946, the trumpeter was a band leader with a steady gig at Nick’s in the Village in New York City.  During the 1950’s he had a recording contract with United Artists and led various bands of his friends in at least 6 albums.  He also left Swing and moved back to Dixieland music which he played as both a guest and sideman for the rest of his life, often in New Orleans, but also throughout the Country and in Europe. The trumpeter also ran a trumpet school in New Jersey with Chris Griffin who was in the Goodman band with him.

A sensational, live photograph from the 1970’s!
