RUDOLF SERKIN - PIANIST

Autographed 7.75 x 9 mounted photograph by the legendary pianist to his legendary pianist colleague, Poldi Mildner, April 24th, 1948. He writes in translation from the German, My dear Poldi, from an old friend of hers.

Serkin (1903-1991) and Mildner (1913-2007) were both Jewish, Austrian virtuoso pianists. Whilst Serkin studied with Richard Roberts, Mildner studied with Hedwig and Moriz Rosenthal. Both went onto brilliant international careers and were amongst the top pianists living in Vienna at the time of the Anschluss in 1938. Both Jewish, they left via different means, Serkin took his family and his in-laws Adolf Busch and family to America. Mildner went first to Sweden where she was made a citizen, then to America, but settled in Buenos Aires. Serkin taught at Curtis, bought a large property in Vermont which he turned into an annual Summer music festival and school and toured internationally. Mildner taught in Buenos Aires initially and began touring again in 1946. It was likely on one of her tours that this photograph was signed.

A wonderful and important association photograph! Serkin is shown at the keyboard of his music room in New York City and interestingly, his fingers are not bandaged in this image. The image was mounted for framing, the bottom border edge has been removed, else near pristine!
