JEAN-PIERRE RAMPAL - FLAUTIST

Autographed and inscribed 8 x 10 glossy promotional action photograph of the French flautist and physician, c. 1970s.

Rampal (1922-2000) descended from a long line of famed French flautists. He is considered by the cognoscenti to be the greatest flautist of the post war period. He studied with his father who played first desk flautist in the Marseilles Symphony Orchestra and was a Professor at the local Conservatoire. His education led him to medical school which was pre-empted after three years by World War II and the German occupiers who drafted him and then had plans to send him to Germany as slave labor. He went AWOL. After the War he went to Paris where he studied flute at the Conservatoire with Gaston Crunelle. After 5 months, he was so accomplished he was awarded a first prize. His first position was first desk flautist of the Vichy Opera in 1946 where he remained until 1950. During those years he began to tour as a concert artist with harpsichordist Robert Veyrin-Lacroix. In 1956 he was appointed first desk flautist of the Paris Opera Orchestra and remained until 1962. During those years he was often heard on French radio, where he became one of their popular artists. Those broadcasts led to a World Tour and his popularity expanded from there.

Rampal was truly interested in flute repertoire and often could be found digging through libraries looking for forgotten works, not just in France, but throughout Europe. His friendship with Czech flautist Milan Munclinger led them to works not heard since the Baroque period and he often performed and recorded with the Czechs baroque period chamber group Ars Rediviva. He also toured the Far East which led to his adding Japanese and other works to his repertoire and eventually an album. He followed his teacher Crunelle as Professor at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as taught master classes internationally. As the most important flautist of his period, he also commissioned works for the instrument to perform. Some of the composers who wrote works for Rampal include, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Aaron Copland, David Diamond,Jindrich Feld, Jean Franaix, Andre Jolivet, Jean Martinon, Krzysztof Penderecki and Francis Poulenc. His fame was such that he even performed on Sesame Street with the Muppets.

One of the best autographed images we have seen of Rampal.
