Scarce autographed original 3" x 5" photograph of the legendary Soviet-Jewish conductor in action during a recording session, January, 1972. (He autographs last name only) This image was taken part of an archive assembled by the legendary British classical record producer James Mallinson during the 1960ís and 1970ís.

Khaikin (1904-1978) was the Principal Conductor of the Kirov Theatre 1944-1953, he replaced Nikolai Golovanov in 1954 as the Principal Conductor of the Bolshoi. Khaykin was Jewish and was Music Director of the Kirov (Mariinsky) under Stalin where Reizen sung Boris Godunov, so the story of Golovanov's firing for hiring Mark Reizen and other Jewish artists to sing at the Bolshoi is questionable. The conductor's 1946 recording at the Kirov of "Khovanschina" with Reizen and Obukhova is a truly legendary opera complete set.

Khaikin's autograph is perhaps the scarcest of the important Soviet conductors and even more so when signed on the front of a photograph.
